Four students arrested during violent UKZN protests

Four students have been arrested at UKZN's Howard College campus in Durban - following violent protests earlier today.

Police say a group of about 100 students gathered on the campus - and proceeded to cause disruptions at registration points.
They say other students were forced to join in - with the crowd ballooning to over one-thousand students.
They allegedly set a student's car on fire and also torched bins on Princess Alice Avenue in Glenwood.
Police spokesperson, Jay Naicker. Police officers from the public order policing unit were deployed at the UKZN's Howard College this morning after a protest by students turned violent. Four students were arrested for public violence. This situation is stable for now and deployments will remain in place," he says.

A risk management services building was also set on fire at the Westville campus.

UKZN management says they're assessing the damage caused this week.
Spokesperson, Ashton Bodrick says police and other authorities will continue to monitor the situation.
"The police, the risk management services staff are on top of each matter at each . We had very little action at the Edgewood campus or the medical school. The majority of is at the Howard College where students are protesting. Right now it's quiet," he says.
