National university strike called to an end

The week-long national university shutdown strike has been called to an end.

This as the department of higher education met with the South African Union of Students on Friday to plan a way forward.
SAUS had called for the strike over issues of access especially those with historical debt to be allowed to register at any university.
In KZN, four students were arrested after violent clashes at UKZN's Howard College Campus.
A security control centre at the Westville Campus was also petrol-bombed.

The department's spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi.
"All NSFAS student with debt can register provided they sign the acknowledgement of debt form and they meet the academic requirements for continued funding all and NSFAS qualifying students are able to register for the academic year without making upfront payments," he said.
He added that there is a mechanism in place agreed to between NSFAS and institutions to assess the financial eligibility of students who obtained a place to study but have not applied for NSFAS.
"All students whether they own a university or not, must be given the academic records," said Mnisi.
