Two suspects arrested for Sydenham teen boy's murder

Two men will appear in a Durban court on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a teenager in Sydenham.

Seventeen-year-old Jarrell Somana was gunned down on Sunday.


According to police, the boy had been walking on Butcher Road when three men jumped out of a car and opened fire on him.


He ran for cover and hid under a bus that was parked in the yard of a nearby property. 


KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says the gunmen found him and killed him.

"Police officers from the Sydenham Trio Task Team were alerted and they swiftly responded. They pursued the suspects and they were joined by a local security company. 


"The suspects were spotted as they drove through Forty Fifth Cutting Avenue. When the suspects reached a dead end they opened fire on police officials before abandoning their vehicle. 


"Two suspects aged 26 and 27 were arrested, while the third suspect managed to flee into the bushes. Police seized two firearms and seven rounds of ammunition which will be subjected to ballistic testing. Investigations by police revealed that the recovered vehicle was hijacked in Ntuzuma last month.


"The suspects are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrates Court tomorrow on charges of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition."

Meanwhile, charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by Wentworth SAPS after two people were shot at on Major Culvert Road. 


One of them, a 36-year-old man, died after being shot in the neck. His friend was grazed by a bullet. 


No arrests have been made.
