Paramedics at the scene say they received multiple calls on Monday morning indicating that a number of children began having difficulty breathing, some had collapsed, and some had had nausea and vomiting.

Netcare 911's Shawn Herbst says multiple units were sent out to the scene, including fire and rescue and safety officials.

"They found a lot of kids in distress and the guys could smell a distinct gas smell in the air but weren't able to identify what gas it is according to the smell.

"A lot of children have been treated on scene. Many have been transported by various ambulance services to the hospital. A headcount hasn't been done at the moment. At the moment, the main thing is just to get children through to hos[ital for treatment."

Herbst says anyone in the area experiencing any of the above symptoms should contact the paramedics.

"At the moment, authorities are on scene, they are in consultation with the company, and we wait the results of the gas tests. Gas pretty much like the wind and smoke, will come in into your house.

"It's going to come in whether your windows and doors are closed. If you are experiencing any if the above symptoms, either call an ambulance or drive through to your nearest hospital."
