Twenty stolen vehicles stopped from entering Mozambique

KwaZulu-Natal police have seized 20 stolen and hijacked vehicles that they believe were meant to be taken across the border into Mozambique.

SAPS says officers have been carrying out operations near Emanguzi in the Umkhanyakude District since June.

It is understood the vehicles were taken from different parts of the country.

Spokesperson Thulani Zwane says some of the vehicles were found hidden in bushes, while others were intercepted just before being taken across the border.

Zwane says eight suspects have been arrested.

"They have been charged with either the possession of stolen property or hijacking. They have already appeared in various courts across the province," confirmed Zwane.

"This operation continues as we are trying to stop the number of [stolen] vehicles crossing the border in the area."

The vehicles that have been seized by SAPS include trucks, bakkies and cars.

"The engine and chassis numbers on these vehicles have been altered. Officers have been given the difficult task of linking the vehicles to related crimes across the country."
