A primary school counsellor, accused of raping young boys, has gone on trial in Pietermaritzburg.

Proceedings got underway in the high court yesterday afternoon. The trial was initially expected to start on Monday but the judge asked for a pre-trial conference.

The NPA says the counsellor is facing charges of accessing and possessing child pornography, sexual assault and rape.
He was arrested in June 2016 and remained in custody until March last year when he was released on bail after several failed attempts.
The counsellor cannot be named to protect the identities of the children. The case has caused outrage in the Pietermaritzburg community.
