Tour Durban routes given all clear following severe #KZNFloods

UPDATE: THE 100KM RACE ROUTE HAS BEEN CHANGED FOLLOWING PROTEST ACTION ON THE M19 ON SATURDAY. THE LONGER RACE HAS BEEN REVISED TO AROUND 90KM AND WILL INCLUDE TWO LAPS OF THE MOSES MABHIDA TO UMDLOTI CIRCUIT.

Organisers of the aQuelle Tour Durban say all three routes have been given the all clear following the severe floods and heavy downpours in and around the city earlier this week.


Race officials wrapped up their route inspections with Durban Metro Police today.


They are happy that all issues, including mudslides, sand and stones washed on the roads and pools of water have been adequately addressed.

At least 70 people have been killed in the severe weather and flooding since the beginning of the Easter long weekend.

The 26th edition of the Tour Durban takes place this Sunday, 28 April 2019.

Organiser Stuart Berry says more than 4,500 road cyclists and mountain bikers have already entered the race. With around 500 to 600 late entries usually received in the days leading up to the race, Berry says they expect growth of around 15 percent in the field taking to the streets on Sunday.

He says the event is expected bring in around R100-million for the local economy.

Cyclists can choose to take part in a 100km road race, 45km fun ride and a 55km cyclocross, which includes both road and off-road sections.

Berry says the 100km route is proving to be the most popular this year.

"It's great to see people who have previously taken part in the fun ride doing some extra training and challenging themselves to do the longer event," he said.

Participants can expect full road-closures on the day.

Registration takes place at Cycle Lab at Cornubia on Friday (10h00 to 18h00) and Saturday (10h00 to 17h00).
