Ramaphosa has today been visiting affected families in Durban and surveying some of the areas hardest hit.

"We'd like to say to the family that we are with you. Our hearts are with you. We are physically here in the form of the local government, the mayor, provincial government, and national ministers are here. We are all here to support the family and would like to thank the community We are all here to support the family," Ramaphosa said.

"We would like to thank all the members of the community - as the rescue services were on the way you were able to be the real rescue heroes of this disaster. You immediately got into action and saved the one person and dug up what remained of the people that died," he said.

The president says he is sorry to those who lost loved ones and their homes during the heavy rain and extreme flooding over the Easter Weekend.

He also made a stop on Rockview Road, where a home collapsed into a massive sink hole, sweeping vehicles and damaging both lanes of the roadway.

He says they will be assisting those who have been affected.

"I immediately contacted our Treasury and said - do we have money to assist our people. They said - President, we do have the money. So money is going to be mobilised to assist our people. These are emergency situations we budget for. Resources will be mobilised in the biggest way so that our people who are currently in need are assisted."
