Three children killed in Umlazi house fire

Three teenagers have been killed after a fire ripped through a property in Umlazi, south of Durban in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency personnel were called to F-Section at 2am after the home caught alight.

The children, aged between 13 and 14-years, had suffered horrific injuries and were declared dead at the scene.

KZN Emergency Medical Services' spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie says a woman was also taken to hospital.

"One patient was treated at the scene for serious injuries," he confirmed.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage and is being investigated by authorities.

"Reports from the scene suggest it was just the single dwelling that was burnt. But it is difficult at the moment to comment on the extent of the damage," said Mckenzie.

Mckenzie says authorities and disaster management officials are expected to return to the home this morning to establish the amount of damage caused by the blaze and to see whether there are any other people who need assistance.
