Those who stand for unity will accept suspension, says Mabe

The African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Pule Mabe believes the party members with integrity will not push back against the party's step-aside resolution.

Mabe's comments come after a night of high drama within the ANC.

The party's secretary-general Ace Magashule, who received a letter of suspension, hit back by saying he has launched an appeal against the decision.

This, according to Magashule, nullified his suspension.

He subsequently wrote a letter suspending ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa due to his alleged involvement in corruption.

Mabe confirmed the validity of the letter but added that the ANC national executive committee (NEC) will meet and respond to Magashule.

"The secretary-general doesn't have to explain anything to me, I am a mere spokesperson of the African National Congress who speaks on behalf of the National Executive committee (NEC).

"The NEC will express itself on those matters written by the SG and as it emerges this weekend, we will be able to come with a decision," said Mabe in an interview with SABC News.

On possible fightbacks and protests, Mabe said ANC members who stand for unity will accept the suspensions.

"The ANC has been able to survive through very difficult moments in history and it has been able to hold to its own unity, those cadres of our organisation who regard themselves as freedom fighters, who know the solemn and huge pride that they paid for South Africa to be a free country, will never contribute to the disintegration of the ANC.

"There will always be difficult moments in the ANC, the expectation is that when faced with such moment we must hold on to our unity and remind ourselves of the commitment we made when we went to the ANC conferences that the unity of the ANC is sacrosanct and that if renewal requires that all of its cadres who are self-respecting must lead from the front and uphold to the discipline of the ANC," he said.

Mabe said the NEC will deal with all appeals on a case-by-case basis.

"Where there are appeals whether by the secretary-general or any other member, such shall be brought forward to the NEC so I wouldn't know at this stage who shall have brought the appeal, I will only know in the meeting of the NEC and they will be dealing with these cases on different merit."

Magashule, along with his co-accused, are currently facing criminal charges in the Bloemfontein High Court in connection with a R255 million asbestos tender.
