Students relocated after fire breaks out at DUT residence
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Durban University of Technology says hundreds of students have been moved to another residence - after a fire burned through parts of an off-campus building on Durban's St Georges Street this week.
Firefighters suspect an electrical fault triggered the blaze on the 13th floor - near a lift shaft.
The flames then spread down to the second floor of the Renaissance building.
More than 300 students were evacuated - several were treated for smoke inhalation.
A woman was rescued after she became trapped in her room. The DUT's Alan Khan says they're relieved no one was hurt.

"The building can accommodate up to 450 students - bearing in mind a number of students have already gone home for the Winter recess. Thankfully, it wasn't at 100-percent capacity."
There was damage to the building and once the investigation has been concluded, we will be in a much better position to know from the experts as to what caused the fire and how to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future," he added.
