Student protests must not disrupt classes: DUT

The Durban University of Technology wants to make sure that academic activities are not disrupted again when student-led protests are held on campus.

Violence took hold during yesterday's demonstrations. 

 Nine students were arrested for allegedly trying to set a security guard alight and burn property.

Campus management has condemned acts of criminality, including the use of petrol bombs and the destruction of varsity infrastructure. 

 It has instructed protesters to refrain from intimidating their peers who choose to study.

 Meanwhile, the police's Jay Naicker says the nine students will appear in court soon.

 Naicker has added his voice to the chorus condemning the violence.

He is urging students to voice their grievances in the correct manner and to raise their concerns “within the confines of the law.”
