Storms leave trail of disaster in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal disaster teams say severe thunderstorms and heavy rains have left a number of homes destroyed.

It follows a number of weather warnings for severe thunderstorms and torrential rain in parts of the province.

 

In a statement, the Department of Cooperative Governance says two houses were left completely destroyed due to heavy rains in the Harry Gwala district.

Officials say another two homes were left partially damaged. 

 

In Durban, two houses were submerged in water in KwaMashu.

 

In Molweni, a home was left damaged by a fallen tree. 

 

Disaster management says no fatalities or injuries have been reported, and families whose homes were left damaged have been successfully evacuated.

 

"Several roads have been damaged by the rains and have been closed to ensure safety; part of the Hullets Bridge collapsed on Old South Coast Road. A boundary wall of Botanic Gardens on John Zikhali Road in Morningside Collapsed, resulting in parts of the road becoming unstable. The road is deemed unsafe to be used by the traffic enforcement officers," said Cogta's Nonala Ndlovu.

“Additionally, several roads in eThekwini experienced waterlogging, but they remain passable. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has lauded the disaster teams who have been on high alert since Monday, monitoring the persistent rains.

 

"MEC Sithole-Moloi emphasised that disaster teams are maintaining a heightened state of readiness as they continue to assess and monitor the rains in the northern parts of the province."
