Images shared on social media show floating vehicles on submerged roads, severely damaged residential routes and embankments completely washed away.

A local motorist who drove near a collapsed bank on Erica Avenue this morning says trees have also been uprooted.

"One lane is blocked on Erica Avenue and the corner of Iris Avenue, the entire bank collapsed and the corner is full of debris."

Joyce Nzimande who lives in Umlazi says it took her twice as long to get to work this morning due to the flooded roads.

"The roads are really bad. I had to wait at the bus stop for about an hour because there were no taxis at all."

She says Amanzimtoti has also been affected.

"It is really bad near Galleria, all the roads are flooded."

Meanwhile, dozens of schools across the province took to decision not to open their doors this morning.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal has also suspended its academic programme across all campuses today due to the severe weather conditions.
