Sentencing gets underway for Verulam serial rapist
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
Sentencing proceedings for the serial rapist who terrorised women in the Phoenix and Verulam areas over a five-year period until 2016, are expected to get underway in the Durban High Court today.
Yesterday, Amos Ngobeni was found guilty of a total of 19 counts of rape and a raft of other crimes, including kidnapping and housebreaking with intent to rape.
His youngest victim was just 7-years-old.

In handing down his ruling, Judge Shyam Gyanda rejected Ngobeni's defense, that he was a pimp and the complainants, prostitutes who he had paid him for his services with sex.
The women themselves had denied Ngobeni's claims and Gyanda found them to be truthful witnesses.
He said if Ngobeni's version were true, then the women would have had nothing to gain by exposing a man who was supposed to be protecting him.
