Verulam man arrested for allegedly raping step-daughter

A 43-year-old Verulam man has been arrested for allegedly raping his step-daughter at their home north of Durban.
Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele says the man was assaulted last night after a neighbour allegedly saw him beating the 10-year-old.

"A neighbour came to the victim's home and intervened. The step-father then chased the girl and the neighbour away. The neighbour then took the child to her house. While she was talking to her, the child revealed that she was raped by her step-father a week ago," she said.
Mbhele says the child may have been raped repeatedly.

"Social workers are busy with the child. After examining her, she will be taken to a place of safety," she said.
She says police are also investigating claims the child had been held captive by the man.
