The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board says around 80 percent of shark nets have been reinstated at protected beaches along the coastline following the recent workers strike.

Nets had been pulled to minimise the environmental impact of the industrial action.

The board says shark safety gear was reintroduced along most beaches, but not on the upper south coast where sardine activity is still “intense”.

The board's Mike Anderson-Reade says shark nets have not been put back in the water from Ansteys beach on the Bluff to Scottburgh.

“They’re very visible from the air. Lot’s of big pockets of fish, especially in that area from Amanzimtoti southwards.”

Anderson-Read says this year's sardine run has been unusual due to the amount of sharks.
