All shark safety gear has been reinstated at protected beaches along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, except for some on the upper south coast.

The board says around 80 percent of nets were placed back in the water yesterday.

The remaining nets will be reinstated today, depending on sardine activity.

Alert: Shark nets removed from Umhlathuze beaches ahead of strike

Nets were pulled from the water last month when workers affiliated to the union, SALIPSWU downed tools over wages.

The South African Liberated Public Sector Workers Union confirmed yesterday that workers have since returned to their posts.

They initially wanted a 15 percent pay rise and a R3,000 housing allowance, but later lowered their demand to 13 percent with a R1,000 allowance for housing.

The union's Mxolisi Cekwana says management and representatives reached an agreement at CCMA-facilitated talks this week.

Meanwhile, the sharks board's Mike Anderson-Reade says there is still a lot of sardine activity between Amanzimtoti and Scottburgh. He says swimming remains off-limits between Ansteys on the Bluff and Scottburgh.

"The reason for this is due to the very intense sardine activity - a lot of sharks too."

Anderson-Reade says an observation flight taken this morning allowed them to see large pockets of sardines in the water between Amanzimtoti and Scottburgh.

He says there is a good chance people could net sardines on the upper south coast later this afternoon:
