Sadtu raises teachers' concerns to HOD

SADTU officials who led hundreds of teachers in a march through Durban have handed a memorandum of their grievances to the HOD of education in the province.
They are complaining about the high number of vacant posts, among other things.
Provincial Secretary Nomarashiya Caluza addressed the marchers at City Hall.
"We have noted the horrible conditions under which education workers are caused to deliver education in KwaZulu-Natal. More than ever before there is duty placed upon us to strenuously oppose all direct or indirect manifestations of exploitation of education workers," she said.

Sadtu General-Secretary, John Maluleke has accused officials in the basic and higher education departments of being arrogant.
"In terms of the Department of Higher Education and Training, we are frustrated by the deliberate bureaucratic inefficiency and arrogance of the departmental officials for lacking urgency in terms of implementing the paid progression but also not recognising the qualification of our lecturers and many other problems that we are experiencing in terms of interfering with our organisational rights in terms of the stock orders for the colleges of education," he said.

The union also says the KZN Education Department has failed to allocate funds to some of the province's schools, resulting in them being dysfunctional.

In a statement yesterday, provincial education officials said there'd been a financial burden put on the department, due to some learners being registered at more than one school.
It says it's now implemented a system using learner ID's to allocate resources so as to eliminate duplications.
Another march by the union is planned for Johannesburg next week.
