Royal AM loses multi-million Msunduzi deal
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
Msunduzi Municipality has pulled the plug on its controversial R27 million sponsorship of Royal AM football club.

The deal, which was signed in 2023, sparked outrage from residents, civil society and political parties.
The Durban-based club was promised R9 million a year over three years in exchange for attracting crowds to Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala Stadium.
However, the Democratic Alliance challenged the deal in court, describing it as wasteful expenditure.
Msunduzi had already paid the first R9 million. Another R9 million was due last year.

In February, the Pietermaritzburg High Court reserved judgment in the matter.
The club, owned by controversial KZN businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, has since been expelled from the PSL.
It’s also under curatorship after SARS stepped in to recover millions in unpaid taxes.
