Robbery suspects killed in Springfield shootout

UPDATE: Police have confirmed five fatalities in a shootout in Durban's Springfield area this morning.

The police's Nqobile Gwala says the gang of armed robbers approached security guards at a shopping centre in Umgeni Road - when they were collecting cash from a shop.

"This morning, at 05h10, the security guards went to pick up money in one of the centres in Springfield when they were accosted by a group of armed suspects. At gunpoint, they took one cash box. There was a shootout between the suspects and police. At this stage - one suspect was shot and died at the scene," she says.

The rest of the robbers then fled the scene towards Parlock - north of the city - where another shootout ensured.

A further four suspects were shot dead. Two suspects are in custody, while a third is in a critical condition in hospital.


Officers say police are still trying to track down one suspect in Parlock.

It's understood all the cash boxes taken in the robbery have been recovered.

Emergency services say at least five bystanders have also been hurt in the ordeal - including two who sustained gunshot wounds.
