Refuse collection could be disrupted in Durban South areas
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Areas, south of Durban, are preparing for disruptions to rubbish and recycling collections.
Service providers subcontracted to eThekwini say they're still waiting for payment from the municipality for the work they've done.
Fed up workers took to the streets and dumped litter on various routes including the N2, south of Durban, yesterday.
Late payments are what put the brakes on refuse collection in some areas in recent months.
Despite these complaints - eThekwini's Mandla Nsele says it's not true that the municipality's failing to pay service providers on time.
"The group is claiming to have not been paid for the refuse collection service they've provided. As a municipality, we dismiss these allegations. We call on communities to rally behind us and condemn in the strongest terms these disruptive acts which are obstructing us from discharging our mandate of providing services to the people," he said.

Some of the affected areas are Umlazi, Folweni, Cato Manor, Mayville, Bonella, Chesterville, Cato Crest and KwaMakhutha.
The city says it's currently meeting with employees, cleansing and solid waste management as well as contractors.
