Rape-accused KZN teacher to remain behind bars

A northern KwaZulu-Natal school teacher accused of having a relationship with an underage pupil will remain behind bars after his court appearance in Melmoth this week.

The 51-year-old man has been accused by the 13-year-old of rape and attempted murder.  

The police's Nqobile Gwala says the girl fell pregnant in February.

The learner apparently went to the teacher to complain about the pain she was experiencing.

"The suspect then allegedly gave the victim tablets and informed her that they were for pain relief. The girl then became very sick and was taken to hospital," explained Gwala.

"She was in a critical condition and it was discovered that the tablets were for termination of pregnancy."

Gwala says charges of rape and attempted murder were then opened in Melmoth.
