Political Killings Task Team ‘does not have good track record’
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Violence monitor Mary De Haas says, despite the alarming allegations at the centre of attempts to disband the Political Killings Task Team, she believes such a decision has merit.

She has previously called for the team to be dissolved in Parliament and even wrote to the Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu.
De Haas, who testified at the Moerane Commission of Inquiry into political killings, believes the task team has achieved very little.
" In seven years, and we've got really good detectives here. They got the conviction, our provincial team, and they've just got more convictions recently. So why do we need a task team with people coming in and out from all over the country, some of whom aren't even detectives?
"Now I've got lists of dozens of cases, hardly any prosecution, hardly any convictions, and it's cost packets of money. It's cost us millions and millions."
De Haas has been speaking to Newswatch days after the task team secured a conviction against the hitman behind the murder of ANC councillor, Zakhele Khuzwayo.
Phathisakhe Ngiba was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court last week.
Khuzwayo, who was attached to the KwaMaphumulo Municipality, was shot and killed in 2022.
Two weeks ago, the team also secured a conviction in the murder case of former ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.
