In the latest murder, the municipality's deputy mayor Thandazile Phoswa died after being shot at her home in Ndaleni last night.

Police have not yet shared information on the circumstances leading to the shooting - or what docket has been opened.

Phoswa's death comes nearly a month after Richmond municipal manager, Sibusiso Sithole was gunned down.

Sithole's killers are yet to be arrested.

The ANC's Mzi Zuma says this threatens the progress already made in the midlands town.

"We were concerned because if there is going to be a spate of murders in this particular area - our view is that this can easily plunge the community to turmoil, instability and reverse the gains of creating a peaceful area and community around here," he said.

Meanwhile, the DA is sending its condolences to Phoswa's family.

The opposition party has also condemned the violence - saying it's inevitably compromising the delivery of services to the people.
