PMB Uber driver ‘targeting pupils’ mere misunderstanding

Reports of a suspicious vehicle targeting schoolchildren in Pietermaritzburg were nothing more than a misunderstanding.

Concerned residents of Mountain Rise reported a man they said arrived at one of the homes, claiming to have been sent by the regular transport provider to pick up children for school.

The Mountain Rise Community Policing Forum's Chairperson, Sham Govender, says their investigation revealed that the vehicle belonged to a lost Uber driver.

"It is actually an Uber that went to the wrong address. We have spoken to the owner of the vehicle and the driver, and they have confirmed that it was supposed to have been, for example, No.37, but they went to No.47.

"The parents became paranoid about it and raised the alarm. We later investigated and found out it was not the case, and there was no malicious intent involved."

However, Govender has urged parents to continue to remain vigilant.

"Educate kids about the transport they use and who their regular transport provider is. Should their regular transport provider not be available for whatever reason for that day, they must be informed by their parents and only leave the school with people they are familiar with.

"If an unknown person comes up to them and claims to be a transport provider, they must go to the school security or the educator staff."
