Phoenix, Chatsworth, Verulam residents demand more police intervention

Residents from Phoenix, Chatsworth and Verulam are calling for more visible policing in their communities in order to curb violent crime.

Scores of concerned residents marched from the Cardinal Road Cricket Grounds in Phoenix to a local police station. A memorandum of demands was handed over to the station commander.

Natasha Naidoo who is with the #Justice4Donovan campaign says a more hands-on approach is needed to nab hijackers, house robbers and murderers.

"We want the courts to consider us when giving suspects bail because we do not want murderers walking freely while we have to hide in our houses", she said.

"We want the police to liaise with families affected by crime and to work with us in creating a safer community", Naidoo said.

Donovan Naicker, of Phoenix, was assaulted and stoned to death after apparently trying to stop a fight in March. Three men accused of his murder are out on bail.
