Parly hears of dire conditions at KZN World Heritage site

Parliament has been requested to act swiftly to deal with the worsening condition of a World Heritage site in KwaZulu-Natal.

Action SA's Athol Trollip says neglect has resulted in ecological devastation at the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in St. Lucia.
He says more needs to be done to prevent further damage.
Trollip spoke on Tuesday during a joint briefing with the Portfolio Committees on Agriculture and Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.
" That whole wetland area has become clogged up with silt and reeds, and it results in back-flooding of these important sugar growing areas. But also almost more important is the fact that the St. Lucia lake has become choked up by silt and reeds."

He said it's worrying that the wetland can only sustain a limited number of species.
" It is a World Heritage site and it used to sustain more than 98 species of different fish, and now there are only two species of fish left, fish that can live in a very muddy environment."
