Over R176m compensation paid to Marikana families: Cele

Police Minister Bheki Cele says over R176 million in compensation has been paid to the families of the victims of the Marikana tragedy.

He says civil claims - worth R18 million are yet to be finalised.
The minister has released a report by the panel of experts report that looked into policing and crowd control within the SAPS.

He says processes to finalise other categories of compensation are ongoing.
There's been a directive from Cabinet for those killed before the massacre to be looked at.
"While it has taken some time to release this vital report, we want to assure South Africans that accountability is in motion."

"The Marikana Commission is unequivocal in its call to the saps to address the systematic problems related to the governance, leadership and accountability."
