Operation Shanela nets over 100k suspects

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says Operation Shanela has netted 109 000 suspects countrywide since the high-density anti-crime initiative started in May.
He says officers have focused their efforts on regular roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, searches at problematic hostels, unlicensed liquor premises, scrap metal yards, and informal businesses.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says of those arrested, 13 000 are wanted for murder, rape and other serious crimes.
"We are registering commendable progress in the fight against crime, the number of those arrested during this period gives us hope that this is a step in the right direction.
“Working closely with all stakeholders in the fight against crime including our communities, we can achieve more successes, we will continue with heightened visibility operations so as to continue to rid our communities off all forms of criminality."
