The Ohlanga waste water pump is finally fixed.

People living near the pump station had complained about seeing sewage spill into the Ohlange river for two weeks because of a burst pipe.

The spillage killed fish and contaminated water flowed into the Umhlanga lagoon and onto neighbouring beaches.

Swimming is again allowed in the area.

DA ward councillor, Nichole Bollman says the municipality is now rehabilitating and aerating the water.

"I think we need to appreciate the efforts of the municipality for acting as they did. It did take about two-and-a-half weeks for the repairs to be carried out - and I think that is the issue," said Bollman.

Bollman believes there is a major sewage issue in the city that needs to be addressed.

Newswatch has reported on several cases in the Umhlanga area which have seen sewage spill or leak onto the town's main beaches, forcing authorities to close the popular swimming attractions.

Local councillors have often put the problem down to aging infrastructure or increased demand on the system due to the growing number of homes and businesses in the area.
