The carcass has been moved by the surf again and is now closer to the Grannies pool ski-boat launch site. The carcass is now on the rocks north of the Umhlanga pier.

eThekwini municipal workers have attached more ropes and chains to the carcass. Some workers have been slicing through the whale meat in an effort to make smaller, more manageable pieces of the carcass that will be disposed of.

Dozens of people are lining the pier, watching the removal efforts from the elevated platform overlooking the main beach.

A large percentage of the whale carcass remains in the surf. Workers who are cutting away at the flesh have to stop and stabilise themselves when waves break onto the carcass.

Although not too strong, the stench of the rotting carcass can be smelt in the wind north of the cordoned off area.

Swimming at beaches between Umhlanga and Umdloti remains banned.

The carcass was first spotted in the surf off Umdloti on Sunday.

It was then towed about 15 nautical miles out to sea, but strong winds and rough seas saw the carcass wash up on a beach north of the Umhlanga lagoon.

It was pulled out to sea by strong tides and currents again on Monday night and beached between the lighthouse and pier yesterday morning.
