Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi met with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board on Monday to discuss its retrenchment plans
The national broadcaster is planning to retrench some 400 staff members as part of its plans to improve its financial viability.
Communication spokesperson Mish Molakeng says both ministers have requested the SABC to return to the negotiating table.

“Both ministers implored the SABC board and its executive management to go back to the negotiations table with the aim of ensuring that all available opportunities are thoroughly explored prior to engaging on a retrenchment process, which must always be the last resort.”
The latest meeting with the board is the second such meeting in the space of two weeks.
Last week, the public broadcaster halted the retrenchment process for a week following pickets and threats of strike action by staff members.
It is expected that the SABC will retrench 400 employees after suffering a loss of R511 million in the last financial year.
