National govt concerned at state of eThekwini water, sanitation infrastructure

Government's called on stakeholders to work together to fast-track repairs to eThekwini's water and sanitation infrastructure.
Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu met with local water entities and government bodies over the weekend to discuss the interventions introduced to address the city's key challenges.

Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi says the team will assist in allocating specific timelines to the projects, among other things.
"The fact is that the infrastructure is not adequate. It is old and aged."
"Those are basically just the challenges that we came across and so what we have now since done is adopt the view of building that better."

Mogotsi says the minister's also concerned about the state of Durban's infrastructure that has led to pollution concerns.
"What has become prevalent is now the presence of E.coli in water that has now led to the closure of several beaches with the festive season upon us."
