Updated | By Newswatch
Officials from eThekwini have taken a dip in the ocean to mark the start of the festive season and to try and convince bathers that the water at the city's beaches is safe.
A group, which included Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, were seen in photos frolicking in the water at one of the beaches.
"The programme will include an update on the City’s beaches as well as demonstrations of various beach activities on offer such as beach sports, rickshaw pullers, and swimming," the city said in a statement.
"The event aims to showcase the many attractions and offerings that locals and tourists can enjoy this festive season.
"It will also outline safety measures being implemented by the City’s Festive Season Management Committee at strategic tourism precincts to ensure a safe and memorable holiday."
There continues to be concerns about the quality of the water at Durban's beaches after several were closed due to high e.Coli levels.
