Residents says it's a health hazard and a ticking time bomb which they believe is being ignored by local government.

The canal runs for about three kilometres through the Bluff National Park Golf Course and through a pipe leading into Angsteys Beach.

Resident are now stuck with an overwhelming stench emanating from the polluted water.

Newswatch paid a visit to the area and saw a bubbling dark sludge-like layer that has rubbish and debris floating in it.

Environmental representative for the golf course Trish Barra says there's been a build-up of methane gas.

"It's like a rotting smell, like a very dirty toilet and it penetrates from here and stays - it just sits and floats on the water."

Captain of the golf course Kevin Wolf on Friday took Newswatch on a tour along the canal by golf cart.

He says they often have to scoop out dead fish found floating in the water and burn it.

"It is a health risk for everybody. Nobody can swim in the beaches and the fish are dying. We are losing our bird life here. We are in trouble."

Wolf described it as a crisis, adding the state of the canal is not just affecting the environment but also business.

eThekwini Municipality has been contacted for comment.
