'Murdered Durban schoolboys were separated and then poisoned'

The Durban Magistrate's Court has today heard details of how two murdered schoolboys might have spent their last moments.

Clairwood boys accused

The 10-year-old best friends - Luyanda Msomi and Njabulo Mankayi - disappeared in November, shortly after leaving their school in Clairwood.

Their bodies were found on separate days - Luyanda’s, in Montclair and Njabulo’s, in the Durban Harbour.

The ex-girlfriend of Njabulo’s father, Amahle Maliwa, and her friend, Liziwe Ngwayise, have been charged with kidnapping and murdering the boys.

When they appeared in the dock today, the gallery was packed - with relatives of the boys' lining the benches.

The case against Maliwa and Ngwayishe is now being transferred to the city's High Court and public prosecutor prosecutor Danette Cole read the summary of substantial facts - on which the State will rely, at trial - into the record.

She told the court the boys were taken to Maliwa's house after school and kept there until nightfall.

She said they were then separated - with Njabulo taken to the Bayhead Road Canal and Luyanda, to Dove Road, in Montclair - and that they were both forced to drink poison before they died.

Njabulo's mother and grandmother struggled to contain their emotions and wept throughout proceedings.

Luyanda's parents clutched each other and buried their heads in their hands.
