Murchison protest: Police confirm 47 in custody

Forty-seven people are in police custody following violent protests on the on the south coast.

There was unrest again last night after a provincial transport department representative addressed the community - which is understood to be unhappy about the state of roads in the area.
Officials say protesters pelted police officers with stones - hitting one officer in the head - and leaving him with serious injuries.
Police fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the crowd.
Protesters blocked off the roads again this morning - demanding the release of those arrested.

The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality's Simon April says the law must take its course.
"We indicated yesterday that it's up to the court to release those arrested. However, we are negotiating with the community to make them understand the consequences and effect of having the road closed."
