A mudslide caused by torrential rain swept through an informal settlement in Tongaat on Monday morning.
Emergency teams say it destroyed eight homes, but miraculously the families living there escaped unhurt.
Paul Herbst, who's with Medi Response, says some areas north of Durban were badly affected by the heavy downpours.

"Reports of quite a lot of mudslides in Protea Place and La Mercy roads. We are concerned about continuous downpours because there has been a general slow downpour. I think guys have been able to evacuate and get to safer grounds.
"We have had no reports of actual drownings, but there has been a lot of structural collapses, but no loss of life yet."
Sunil Komalpersad, who drove from Phoenix to the Durban CBD on Monday morning, has urged motorists to be extra-cautious.
