Risks of flooding in KZN after heavy weekend downpours - Cogta

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KZN says the heavy rains lashing the province have increased the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

Disaster management teams are monitoring the province's vulnerable parts, after weather forecasters issued a level two warning about severe thunderstorms. 


The SA Weather Service also warned of localised flooding, damaging winds and severe lighting over KZN's western region.

Forecaster Wiseman Dlamini says areas like Amajuba, Uthukela, parts of Harry Gwala and Umgungundlovu are affected.


"We do expect 80% showers are thundershowers today [Monday] and then in central parts of the province going towards to the coastal areas we are expecting 60% today, which might lead to localised flooding in the afternoon."


eThekwini metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu is urging motorists to exercise caution, as heavy downpours overnight have led to treacherous conditions on the roads. 


"The N3 Durban-bound from Paradise Valley on-ramp into town the road is full of water."

Meanwhile, Cooperative Governance urging communities near rivers or in low-lying areas, to please find shelter on higher ground. 


It's also appealed to pedestrians not to cross low-lying bridges or flooded walkways.
