Msunduzi recoups R50m in mass disconnection drive
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Msunduzi Municipality says it's managed to collect nearly R50 million in revenue during the first three days of its service disconnection drive.
The city has been switching off the electricity and water supply of businesses, schools and government departments that owe it money.
Acting municipal manager Nelisiwe Ngcobo says they aim to collect R500 million over the month-long campaign.
That's about nine percent of the R5.5 billion it says it's owed for services.
Ngcobo says there are no valid reasons for any government departments not to pay their utility bills.

"They have been asking us to do reconciliation. They were not happy. We have done that. We have had engagements that we were assisted by Cogta in trying to solve some of the accounts.
"But the problem is they are still not paying us and at some point when they were paying, they were paying half and some are not paying at all in many instances. That is why debt has accumulated. in terms of government departments, they are owing us up to R230 million."
