Msunduzi to focus on the workplace under new mayor

Msunduzi's new mayor says it is time the municipality starts training its citizens for the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution.

Mzimkhulu Thobella and his Executive Council were sworn in yesterday after they were elected by secret ballot.

"It is no secret that our economy has taken a severe knock over the past few months. This has resulted in major job losses, elevated levels of poverty and joblessness," he said.

He says unemployment is a growing problem in Pietermaritzburg because of unskilled labour.

Manilal Inderjit is his deputy and Eunice Majola the municipal speaker.

Thobella says they will waste no time in revamping the troubled municipality.

The first thing they want to do is get people working.

"These changes are all mostly due to the impact of technology and digitisation of industries. As a municipality, it is important that we embrace the changes and equip our citizens with the necessary tools," said Thobella.

Former mayor Themba Njilo and his team were shown the door about two weeks ago for poor performance.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal also redeployed its members serving on the Executive Committee in eThekwini.

However, eThekwini has not yet elected its new mayor.

This after Zandile Gumede withdrew her resignation from the City's top office this week.

Gumede, who is facing corruption-related charges linked to a multi-million Rand waste tender dating back to 2016, is due in court again early next year.

She is currently out on R50,000 bail.

Her supporters believe the proper processes to remove her as mayor were not followed.
