ANC applauds #ZandileGumede for stepping down

The ANC has applauded Zandile Gumede for making, what it is calling, the right decision.  The ruling party confirmed last night that eThekwini's embattled former mayor submitted her resignation.

The party's national spokesperson, Pule Mabe says they commend Gumede for heeding the call and showing discipline.

"This is important for the ANC, it sends a message to all our members that the ANC is the ultimate authority in the movement," said Mabe.

KwaZulu-Natal's Transport MEC, Mxolisi Kaunda is set to wear the eThekwini mayoral chain.

Gumede and her executive were recalled by the provincial structures due to poor performance.

Mabe says the party can also confirm the resignation of uMsunduzi's mayor, Themba Njilo.

"I did speak with the provincial secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli. He confirmed that both the eThekwini and Msundzi mayors had tendered their resignations."

Msunduzi has been placed under administration.

Gumede was arrested earlier this year in connection with a multi-million Rand waste removal tender.

The Hawks are investigating corruption-related charges. She is due back in court early next year.

Gumede was granted R50,000 bail.
