Mooi River protest turns deadly

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating charges of murder and public violence after one person was shot dead during a service delivery protest in Mooi River.

Bruntville community members embarked on the protest in the early hours of Monday morning.
They blockaded the R62 and R103 with burning tyres and rocks, and threw stones at some passing vehicles.

It's understood they were protesting over water and electricity issues.
Police say a 26-year-old man was shot in the vicinity.
The motive of the killing is not known.

The protest has been cleared and but police remain on the scene.
