Water supply to the area north of Durban was interrupted more than a month ago when the April floods damaged the local water treatment plant.

Faheem Ismail joined his fellow residents on Watson Highway to voice their frustration.

"People are very upset. I mean, imagine yourself 50 days without drinking water and without any tankers coming in. The tankers are coming in sometimes twice or three times a week and that's not on. And there are small kids here as well.

"So the guys in the community decided to block the roads and let the people know what's happening here so a lot people have now realised what is happening in Tongaat."

Human Aid SA has been helping to supply water in Tongaat.

The NGO's Ahmed Osman says he doesn't blame residents for taking to the streets.

"Anybody would be frustrated without water for two days or three days. We surviving and we have adapted our minds to cope without electricity for a few days or a few hours but that's a challenge.

"When it comes to water which is a basic necessity to life and to go for a few days [without] it is a challenge but to go over 50 days."

Osman has called on eThekwini Municipality to step up its game.

The city says some areas in Tongaat started receiving running water this weekend after the construction of an emergency water supply pipeline was completed.
