The footage, recorded at a home in Pietermaritzburg, has sent shock waves online.

Mountain Rise detectives have confirmed that the younger woman seen torturing the grandmother at her home has been arrested.

In the video clip, the 63-year-old woman was seen being pushed and shoved repeatedly at the Sobantu home.

She struggles to breathe and, later, her head is forced under a tap.

A short while later, the younger woman loosens her grip on the grandmother, who crawls away from the sink on her knees.

Social Development MEC Weziwe Thusi says it is sickening to watch.

Thusi says social workers have removed the elderly woman from the home.

She has been placed in a residential facility for older persons.

"A social worker took the old lady to the police station to open a case. After that, she was taken to a place to be safe from the girl who beat her up. We are working with the police," she said.

Officers say the 31-year-old will appear in court today.
