Marrianridge protesters dispersed by police

Police have dispersed crowds of protesters from the Marrianridge area, outside Pinetown.
About a thousand people demonstrated in Milky Way Road earlier.
It is understood residents are unhappy over housing issues.
"Police who were at the scene had used rubber bullets as well as a water cannon. The crowd has been dispersed right now. There is still rubble, stones and tyres on the road but the police will clear the road as soon as they get more manpower," he said police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.
Community member, Roxanne Pennington told Newswatch earlier that several people were hurt when police used tear gas and water canons to disperse crowds.

"The police actually opened fire on the people, fired rubber bullets, some people have been badly injured, they have open wounds and there's teargas throughout the community," she said.
But Zwane says officers had to intervene when crowds turned violent.
"A group of about 1000 people were becoming violent. They had to use minimum force," he said.
