Violence erupts in Marrianridge protest

Residents claim several people have been hurt after police used tear gas and water canons to disperse crowds.
Milky Way Road has been closed to traffic.
Community member, Roxanne Pennington says many people are injured.
"The police opened fire on us, they used rubber bullets and some people are badly injured, they have open wounds. There is teargas throughout the community. There are some Caspers that are coming now," she said.

Police spokesperson - Thulani Zwane says officers had to intervene when crowds turned violent.
"A group of about 1,000 people were becoming violent and police had to use teargas as well as a water cannon to disperse them. We had to use minimum force," he said.
It's believed community members are up in arms over housing issues.
