Emergency services say the man sustained severe injuries after apparently being struck be several vehicles on the northbound carriageway, just after 7pm.

Crisis Medical's Kyle van Reenen says medics initially received reports of a pedestrian accident on the highway.

However, Van Reenen says it then emerged that the man might actually have fallen off the back of a van, before being hit by passing vehicles.

"When Crisis Medical paramedics arrived on scene they found the severely dismembered remains of a man, believed to be about 30-years-old, lying in the centre lane of the highway," said Van Reenen.

There was nothing emergency services could do to assist him.

Van Reenen says paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

He says police were on scene and are investigating the exact circumstances leading up to the crash.

Rescue Care paramedics say they found carnage on the road when they arrived at the scene. Firefighters had to cut one of the drivers from the wreckage using the jaws of life.

He had sustained major injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The other driver was stabilised on scene and taken to hospital in a serious condition.
