Man claiming to be father of Newlands East baby speaks

The man claiming to be the biological father of the newborn baby girl rescued from a stormwater drain in Newlands East, north of Durban does not know what led to her abandonment.

The man has been speaking after the little girl's mother appeared in court this week on charges of attempted murder.

The 32-year-old was granted bail of R5 000.

She was arrested just over a week ago at a local hospital.

This after emergency services worked for hours to rescue the little girl from deep inside the stormwater drain last month.

Despite being married to another woman, the father claims to have been in a relationship with the baby's mother for some time.

He has admitted to lying about his marital status and living a double life.

He claims he was still in a relationship with the mother of the baby throughout her pregnancy.

He says he was told his girlfriend had a miscarriage days before the little girl was rescued.

"I'm dumfounded. I'm even trying to ask questions to what caused this. I don't know what snapped or what caused the problem. I love children, even though I had been unfaithful [in my marriage] I would have remained faithful to the child," he said.
